Getting started
What the health score means, and its limits
The health score is a 0 to 100 indicator built from a company's public records. It is not a credit rating, and it does not use turnover, profit, payment history or CCJs.
Every company page shows a Health Score from 0 to 100, a grade and a risk level.
What it is
The score is a rules-based indicator. It is built only from records that belong to the company itself, and it looks at:
| Area | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Company vitality | Status, age and industry |
| Filing compliance | Whether accounts and confirmation statements are filed on time |
| Ownership stability | Changes to the people with significant control |
| Financial exposure | Secured borrowing (charges) and whether accounts are filed |
| Sector benchmark | How companies in the same industry usually survive and file |
| Regulatory profile | Registrations such as CQC, food hygiene and charity |
Insolvency notices in The Gazette and the company's status cap the score. For example, a company in liquidation scores no more than 25, and one with a proposal to strike off no more than 40.
The Overview tab shows each area's score, its weight and the reasons behind it. "Low data" means we had little to go on for that area.
Grades and risk levels
| Score | Grade |
|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | A+ |
| 80 to 89 | A |
| 70 to 79 | B+ |
| 60 to 69 | B |
| 50 to 59 | C+ |
| 40 to 49 | C |
| 30 to 39 | D |
| Under 30 | F |
Risk levels: very low (75 or more), low (60 to 74), medium (45 to 59), high (30 to 44) and critical (under 30).
What it does not tell you
- It is not a credit rating and not a credit limit. We are not a credit reference agency.
- It does not score turnover, profit or losses. A loss-making company that files on time can score well.
- It does not include county court judgments (CCJs), payment behaviour, bank data or sanctions lists. We do not hold them.
- It does not score directors' other companies. Names are shared by many people, so we cannot match them reliably.
- It has not been statistically tested against company failures. Treat it as a quick guide to what to look at, not as a decision.
The score is only as good as the public records behind it, which can be incomplete or out of date. Check anything important against the original record before you rely on it.
