Missing accounts years, turnover "not published" and PDF filings
Why a company's Accounts tab may be missing a year, show turnover as "Not published", or say its accounts are being read from PDF or paper filings.
We read every company's figures from the accounts it files at Companies House. There are a few common reasons a year or a figure is missing.
You see only one year
Every plan, including Free, shows every year of accounts we hold.
Turnover and profit say "Not published"
Most small companies are allowed by law to file accounts without a profit and loss account. Micro-entity, abridged and "filleted" accounts usually include only the balance sheet. When that happens, the company page says:
This company files small-company accounts, which may leave out the profit and loss account. Turnover and profit are not published, so only the balance sheet is shown.
The figures were never made public, so no one can show them from the filed accounts. Ask the company directly if you need them.
- Not published means the type of accounts filed leaves that figure out.
- Not filed means the company did not include that figure in its accounts.
A year is being read
The Accounts tab tells you when we are still working on the history. For example:
- "2 more years found in the filing history, being read now";
- "1 missing year being filled from the filed documents";
- "1 older paper-filed year being checked before it is shown";
- "Checking the filing history for earlier years".
When every filed year is in, it says "Complete: every filed year is here".
The company files PDF or paper accounts
Some companies, often older or larger ones, file accounts as PDF or paper documents rather than in the electronic format.
- When you open the company page, we start reading those documents. Figures usually appear within the hour.
- We check each year against the basic accounting rules (for example, that the balance sheet balances) before we show it.
- If figures fail those checks, the tab says "Accounts being checked" while we review them.
- If we could not read the figures reliably, the tab says so. The filed documents are always on the Filings tab, where you can read them yourself.
What the labels in the table mean
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Filed | Read from the accounts filed electronically |
| Scanned | Read from PDF or paper accounts |
| From next year | The year's own accounts could not be read, so these are the prior-year figures printed in the next year's accounts |
| r | The figure was restated in a later year's accounts |
The company is new
A new company files its first accounts up to 21 months after it is incorporated. Until then there is nothing to show.
The latest year is old
If a company has not filed recently, its latest figures may be years old. Check the "Year ending" date at the top of each column, and the company's filing deadlines.
Still think a year is missing?
If Companies House has accounts for a year we do not show, and the Accounts tab is not reading it, report it with the company number and the year.
