Company data
Where our data comes from, and what we do not hold
Our data comes from Companies House and other official UK public registers, mostly under the Open Government Licence. We also screen against official sanctions lists, including those of the UK (with UN designations), the EU, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and France. CompanyStack is not affiliated with or endorsed by Companies House. We do not hold CCJs, credit ratings or contact details.
Our sources
Most of our data comes from Companies House: company profiles, officers, people with significant control (PSCs), filing history, charges and the accounts companies file.
We add information from other official public registers, including:
- The Gazette (corporate insolvency notices, refreshed twice a day);
- the ICO data protection register;
- Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings;
- the Charity Commission;
- CQC and Ofsted inspections;
- gender pay gap reports;
- the Environment Agency Pollution Inventory.
The ICO, food hygiene, charity, CQC, Ofsted, gender pay gap and Environment Agency data is a copy loaded in April 2026 that is not yet refreshed automatically. We copy the disqualified directors register from Companies House every day. Until our copy is complete and current, a KYB check reports the disqualified directors check as unable to check, never as a pass.
We also load official sanctions lists, each from the government body that publishes it, to screen companies and the people connected to them, including the UK Sanctions List (which includes the UN Security Council designations the UK gives effect to), the US OFAC lists and the US Consolidated Screening List (Commerce and State Department lists), the Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and French lists, and the EU Consolidated Financial Sanctions List. We check them for changes every hour (the French register every three hours). Each result names the lists it screened. See Sanctions screening.
The full list, with licences, is on our data sources page. Most of it is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We do not scrape unofficial sources.
On a company page, the Data Sources tab shows what we found about that company in each register.
What we add
Our software reads figures from filed accounts, works out ratios and trends, and calculates the health score and KYB results using fixed, published rules. These are only as good as the records behind them. Data accuracy and corrections explains how we read and check the figures.
What we do not hold
People often ask for these. We do not have them:
- County court judgments (CCJs).
- Credit scores, credit ratings or credit limits. We are not a credit reference agency. The health score is not a credit rating.
- Politically exposed persons (PEP) screening.
- Contact details such as phone numbers or email addresses.
- Residential addresses or full dates of birth of directors. Companies House does not publish them, and we do not collect them anywhere else.
Can I use the data?
You can use what you get from CompanyStack for your own business purposes, as our Terms of Service set out. If you publish extracts, credit "Source: Companies House via CompanyStack". You must not resell our data in bulk or build a competing database from it.
If you take personal data out of CompanyStack, such as directors' names, you become responsible for it under UK data protection law. Do not use it for unsolicited marketing.
